In the Mahabharata, Indra - the Lord of the Heaven, explains to Yudhishtira - the eldest of the Pandava brothers, "This is the law of the Heaven (Devaloka).  If a man's sins outweigh his punya (virtues), then he comes straight into heaven when he dies. When his punya is exhausted, he sinks into hell to suffer for ‘his sins. But if a soul's virtue exceeds his sins, then he pays first for his crimes by passing through hell, and then comes to swarga (heaven) forever. "

Newton's third law of motion, "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction," is the closest scientific principle to explain the Law of Karma. Existence is a mere multiplier, returning to you multiple times for your good deeds and penalising you multiple times for your wrong deeds. For all your Karmic investments (the value you have added to the world), Existence is obliged to return multiple times to you. For all your Karmic debts (the value the world added to you), Existence is responsible to recover multiple times from you. Hence the law, "You do not get in life what you desire. You only get in life what you deserve." Though we may not always succeed in connecting the dots, there is an eternal link between what has happened and what is happening. Existential response to our Karmic investments and Karmic debts are the current happenings in our life.

However, Existence does not operate with any 'Net' arithmetic. There is nothing like ten good deeds minus three wrong deeds yielding a net of seven good deeds. Your ten good deeds become your Karmic Investment and to that extent, multiplied good will be returned back to your life. Your three wrong deeds become your Karmic Debt and to that extent, multiplied disturbances will happen in your life. That's why even Duryodhana has good times and Yudhishtira too has bad times.

Even Rama suffers and Ravana has some great times. This life is an integrated package. It is neither a bed of roses nor a pathway of thorns. All that matters is to know that when you live a life of rightthoughts, right feelings and right actions, even if you may be tested, you shall never be forsaken.... Never.
That's what Indra said, ". . .then comes to swarga forever."
